As part of SC Group companies’ efforts to reduce carbon footprint, SSRI has taken the initiative to reduce CO2 emission from electricity usage to zero, through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificate (REC). REC, also known as Green Power Certificate, is a tradable certificate of electricity generated by renewable energy, such as geothermal, solar and wind etc.

On 29 October 2021, SSRI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Indonesia’s state-owned electric utility, PLN  to purchase the same amount of renewable energy as carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases generated by the SC owned high-rise building, Summitmas, where SSRI office is located. In the future, SC will also consider supporting PLN in selling its greenhouse gas emission quota.

According to SSRI, Summitmas is the first building in Indonesia to become a “zero-emission building”. It  aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission to practically zero, and is expected to reduce CO2 emission by 7,000 to 8,000 tons per year.

SC is focusing on decarbonisation and has announced its intention to withdraw from coal-fired power generation business by the late 2040s. PLN also plans to stop building new coal-fired power plants from 2025 and to completely stop operating coal-fired power plants by 2060.
