With the vision to reduce single-use plastic bag and a carbon free world, we participated in the 0-1 Challenge 2022 with the project name “Bio-degradable Jute Plastic Packaging”, whereby we proposed to use it as a replacement for traditional plastic bags. This bio-plastic is made from a local plant called “Jute”, well-known as a golden crop in Bangladesh. We used jute cellulose extract to produce bio-plastic, yet giving its appearance like usual plastic.
The idea sounds exciting, but at the same time it was very tough to persuade people to believe the existence of this invention, and the feasibility of building a business upon it. After obtaining the fund of JPY 1 million from the pitch contest, we started the real business journey. SCAO Dhaka made an agreement with the scientist who was the technology partner and patent owner of this idea.
After that, we continued our research and trial production up to the very last day to develop the product for the suitable market. We identified the potential market users (incl. Retail, Fast Fashion, Agriculture sectors and any customers that request for customised solution for their business needs) for commercial use.
We collaborated with one of the biggest supermarket chain of Bangladesh – “Unimart” to conduct feasibility study and market screening in 2 phases. In the 2nd phase we succeeded in making 100% biodegradable jute plastic bag based on the required weight capacity and water resistance level.
We want to materialise this dream of making bio-degradable plastic with the golden crop of Bangladesh.
0-1 challenge is indeed the platform for making a start of the journey, and it will continue with many innovative spirits to make things happen.
