On 28 November 2023, Sumitomo Corporation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with EGAT International Company Limited (“EGATi”) on a strategic partnership to accelerate green transformation in the ASEAN region.
EGATi is a subsidiary of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (“EGAT”), with the role of running global energy business outside Thailand. EGATi and Sumitomo join forces under this MOU to explore and develop renewable power businesses together in ASEAN, contributing to the economic development of the region and accelerating Thailand to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065.
MOU was signed by Mr Bundit Umpornsrisupap, Acting President of EGATi, and Mr Koichi Taniguchi, Corporate Officer and GM of Global Power Infrastructure Business Division of Sumitomo Corporation. The signing ceremony was held at EGAT Headquarters, witnessed by Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, Deputy Governor – Power Business and Acting Governor of EGAT, and Mr Kozo To, SCTL President.
In ASEAN region, the stable energy supply demand has risen sharply in line with the population and economic growth. Simultaneously, the initiatives for decreasing GHG emission with consideration on the situation for each region are strongly required. Given such fact, the Japanese Government and other Asian countries have established the Asia Zero Emission Community (“AZEC”) concept to accelerate the decarbonisation and energy transition in Asia. Sumitomo Corporation is following this AZEC concept, as a private company, and is promoting Asia’s energy transition including this MOU.
