Please share with us your vision for SCIN under SHIFT2023 and how the current local/global business environment is affecting the way you manage your goals.

SCIN has set its vision as “To develop SCIN’s original business in order to contribute to sustainable growth of India.”

“Understanding SBU Strategy in relation to Indian Business Environment”; “Leveraging Strategic Partners’ Strengths and Ours to create Value”; “Leveraging Internal Strength by promoting Cross-Organisational Collaboration”; and “Leveraging Human Resources by promoting Inclusion” are four important key approaches to execute our strategy, achieve our goal, and materialise our vision.

As I mentioned on our SCIN homepage, the scale and growth potential of India is an attraction for businesses and investors from around the world. I believe that capturing the energy and vitality of India, making the most of its business potential, and contributing to the sustainable prosperity and development of its communities are mutually complementary goals for Sumitomo Corporation and the country itself.

In this context, I would say that the current global business environment is not affecting the way I manage our goals. We see strong energy and vitality in the country. We will leverage our expertise, network, and comprehensive capabilities in a variety of businesses, and above all, we will work with passion for the prosperity and development of the country and local communities of India.

How would you describe your leadership style? Has it changed overtime and why (or why not)?

It is difficult for me to describe my leadership style. I wonder how my colleagues/members around me, see me.

I personally believe in respecting the individuals and trusting the members. I do not like to impose on others. I have always kept in mind to create an environment where each individual can participate proactively with a sense of responsibility.

However, in difficult situations, I always keep in mind that I should take the initiative and not leave it to others.

My ideal is to be kind to my colleagues and strict with myself, but it is not easy to be strict with myself all the time. I sometimes too am lenient on myself!

This way of thinking may be derived from my nature and character, which has not changed since I was young.

You mentioned in our newsletter under Management Member Introduction that you used to spend your free time with your dogs in Japan, you must be a dog lover! Could you please share with us more about your pets and your special moments with them?

I have two dogs. One is a 15-year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called “Bond” who is named after 007 James Bond. He has always been with my family in Osaka, Chicago and Tokyo. He is the bond of our family. The other is a 5-year old Black Labrador Retriever called “Taylor” who is named after Taylor Swift. He (not she) came to our family after we returned to Tokyo from Chicago. He is still young and strong, and has helped in my weight reduction during WFH days in Tokyo under COVID19. Now I am alone in Delhi and missing them!

I strongly believe in… the future of India

I spend most of my time.. in Delhi Golf Club since I came to India

The food I crave most often is… NATTO (fermented soybeans)

One personal rule that I never break is… believe in myself

The thing that cheers me up whenever I think about are… my dogs

One thing I really want but can’t afford yet is… Harley Davidson (or Royal Enfield)

If I could go back in time, I would… go back to young days to be a hunter or a fisherman. I am now too old to be one

If I have enough money to live comfortably without having to work, I would… maybe still work, for own self-satisfaction
