SC completes rehabilitation and maintenance of Manila Metro Rail Transit Line 3
22 March 2022
Manila, Philippines
On 22 March, a ceremony was held in Manila to celebrate the completion of Manila Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) rehabilitation project. Some of the participants included Ex-President of the Philippines Mr Duterte, Transportation Secretary H.E. Mr. Tugade, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Mr Koshikawa, Head of JICA Philippines Office Mr Sakamoto, SCOP President Mr Takano, representatives of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, our partner in the project, as well as other related parties.
As the main contractor, SC has concluded the rehabilitation and maintenance contract for Line 3 on 28 December 2018, and commenced the work in May 2019. This rehabilitation was completed in December 2021, and the running speed of Line 3 was recovered from 30 km/h to 60 km/h. Under the current contract, the maintenance contract will continue for 17 months until May 2023 after rehabilitation is completed.
At the ceremony, the Minister of Transport explained that before the participation of our company, not only was the waiting time for Line 3 long and inconvenient, but there were also frequent occurrences of derailment accidents, vehicle failures, and service interruptions. It was not uncommon to see passengers walking on the tracks from the broken down vehicles to the next station.
He commended the Government of Japan’s support, ODA loans from JICA, rehabilitation and maintenance by our company and the MHI Group for greatly improving the infrastructure of Line 3 and making passengers enjoy a fast, cool, convenient and comfortable ride on Line 3.
As a congratulatory gesture to the successful rehabilitation of Line 3, the President announced free rides on this Line 3 (the cost was borne by the government of the Philippines) for approximately one month from March 28 to April 30.
