In 2006, the government of Myanmar moved its capital city from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw. It is under the direct administration of the President. The former capital city, Yangon, is still standing as the Commercial City of Myanmar.
Here are some interesting facts about Nay Pyi Taw City:
- Nay Pyi Taw means “Abode of Kings” in Burmese language
- It is located 320 km north of former capital city of Yangon
- It hosted the 2013 Southeast Asia Games
- It is 8 times the size of New York City
- It houses sprawling government complexes, lush villa-style developments, and 20-lanes boulevards but few residents, which means you probably never have to queue for food, visiting attractions, and would not get stuck in traffic
- Most popular attraction is Uppatasanti Pagoda, a replica of Yangon’s famous Shwedagon Pagoda (also known as the Golden Pagoda)
- It has 3 seasons: a cool and dry season, a scorchingly hot season, and a rainy season. Temperature ranges from 14oC to 32o
