Contribution to the society
We contribute to quality education too!
Representing SC Tokyo, our office signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with 2 universities in Phnom Penh city for the purpose of providing scholarship to outstanding students facing financial problems. The scholarship was given out every year since 1994.
This year’s scholarship ceremony was held on 11 December 2023 at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and National University of Management (NUM). SCAO Phnom Penh Office GM Mr Takashi Ishizuka attended the ceremony.
Up till this date, there were thousands of Sumitomo scholarship recipients who graduated and took up management positions in different fields at international companies and government sectors.
This shows how important Sumitomo scholarship is – we contribute to human resource development in Cambodia.

Angkor Sankran 2023 – Celebrating Khmer New Year in Siem Reap
Contributed by Mr Khim Vathanak, SCAO Phnom Penh Office Business Unit No.1
Angkor Sankran is a mega three-day festival celebrating Khmer New Year that falls on 14-16 April. All provinces and locations have their own programmes to celebrate the event, one of the most popular places for the new year celebration is Siem Reap, a resort town in northwestern Cambodia that is popular among the tourists. It is the home to over 72 temples, including the most famous ancient temple site – Angkor Wat, which was listed as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992.
The Angkor Sangkran held in Siem Reap, is a grand multi-day enjoyable event with various cultural activities held around Angkor Wat, and along the beautiful river in downtown centre. It transforms the province into a colourful and bustling hub of performance activities aiming to preserve art, culture, and traditions of the Khmer people.
Last year (in 2023), the event was marked as the 10th anniversary of Angkor Sankran. A blessing ceremony was held on the first day, April 13 early morning in front of Angkor Wat to kick-start the festival. Each year, there is a Guinness world record attempt for the festival. In fact, last year, there were two attempts! On April 11, the aim was to show the largest display of origami hearts consisting of 3,917,805 hearts in front of Angkor Wat temple, while on April 15, another attempt was the largest Madison dance in Angkor Thom. Both attempts broke the Guinness world record.
On top of the above, visitors could enjoy traditional dances, floating lanterns, traditional Khmer games, Bokator martial arts displays, classical theatre performances and a Cambodian products trade fair during this event. Angkor Sankran was a small but enjoyable event in 2022, but 2023 became one of the largest events on record. Following the successful celebration last year, this year sets to restart again in a big way.
